I am taking part in 2 Mail Art exhibitions this month:

For the first one "Mail Art - Post Ray Johnson" currently showing at the A&D Gallery in Baker Street, I asked my friend Roderick Mills to collaborate (see above)

"Mail Art, also called Postal or Correspondence Art, is a worldwide cultural movement
that began in the early 60s and as the name suggests involves sending art unprotected through the postal system. Outside of the formal world of fine art, and often using humour and collaboration, Mail Art is seen as the precursor of what is known as
Urban Art."
For this exhibition, the gallerists have asked a wide range of artists from a variety of disciplines, to create Mail Art, often for the first time.

The proceeds will go towards equipping Teenage Cancer Trust's new Day Care Centre."

The second exhibition is a Postcard Art Project curated by Geoffrey Harrison who asked 32 artists/designers from the Bloomsbury area to collaborate with over 1000 creatives. Designer Andreas Pohancenik is one of these 32 and he kindly aksed me to participate in the project. It all starts tomorrow at the Orange Dot Gallery to coincide with the Bloomsbury Festival and I am eager to discover the final display!

Little World Theatre

Here is a new company "Little World Theatre" for which I did the logo and illustration. They will offer multilingual drama workshops in schools across the UK and promise to be a lot of fun to work/play with. Tomorrow comes out the new issue of the beautiful MUZE magazine published by Bayard Press in France.

Featured in the mag are 3 short stories including the intriguing "Charlene and Trudy go shopping" by Kate ATkinson for which I created the illustrations. A dreamy atmosphere and a quirky narrative made this job a real bliss...

This has been a revelation lately. Simon Johan is a photographer whose work mixes traditional film techniques with digital effects. It is up to the viewer to find where the real stops and where the imaginary starts. Ambiguous, poetic and sometimes funny, his images never stop to startle me.

Paul Davis is angry

Being an AOI member means that I received this morning the latest issue of Varoom.
As it was the case last time (and the one before I think), the magazine opens with the column of witty artist/illustrator Paul Davis.
Paul Davis casts a bitter (yet hilarious) look on life as an illustrator, and in the fantasmatic world of fake happiness that we live in, I find this bitterness utterly refreshing.
Usually, people hate to complain and are uneasy with people complaining. We just don't like it... It sends bad vibes to our "winning" approach to life.
As an artist and illustrator, you learn very early that you must project an aura of success around you if you want to be taken seriously. You must appear busy and working even if you're not, you must blag your way around and mix with the right people, because success is magnetic. Positive thinking brings positive things bla bla bla...
Nevertheless, being an artist also means that you can get quite depressed (creativity doesn't come from cheerfulness, sorry...), and putting on a show is sometimes well... tricky...
So thanks to Paul for talking honestly about what life as an illustrator can be (an uneven adventure with a lot of slaps that would shake the thickest skin) as opposed to what we would like it to be (an easy ride.)

London Original Print Fair

It is on until Thursday evening at the Royal Academy, and you can find there a vast range of prints including Picasso's, Chagall's, Peter Blakes and many more.

After a few years of organising Opera Concerts in her own living room (for our greatest pleasure), my friend Marie has decided to have a go at doing the same thing for other people. She has just created the new company "Opera pour un Salon" (for which I did the logo below), and she is now planning concerts for people who wish to experiment the world of Classical Music in the intimacy of their home:

As she explains, "Opera pour un Salon" has 4 aims:
- Revive the musique de Chambre tradition
- Make Opera and Classical Music more accessible
- Support and promote young music talent
- Bring Opera & Classical Music to your Salon for you to share with friends, family & the whole neighbourhood

We have taking down the show at the weekend and I wanted to say a big thank you to Design Week, Stella Magazine (above), Amelia's Magazine and Fashaddictblog to feature the exhibition.
It has been fantastic to get such a good response, and to meet so many of you.

She is representing artists, illustrators and designers working across a number of disciplines and bringing a fresh approach to creative agencies
Gina says: "Developing GAS Art Agency is a way of discovering new creative projects using established artists and designers, making their talent available in markets they might not otherwise reach. I am particularly keen to extend beyong publishing and advertising to reach the interiors market and for our artists and designers to create artwork for applied arts ie: textiles and ceramics, as well as producing limited edition and one-off artwork for personal or commercial clients"

The RCA is presenting at the moment a fantastic retrospective of Polish graphic designer Roman Cieslewicz.
I went this afternoon and the work is fascinating. His collages are not as well known as his posters , but luckily there are many on show there. Surreal and strong.

Irreverent stamping from Andy Warhol

I first saw this cover during an exhibition at the A&D Gallery last year.
Before his Fine Art debut, Andy Warhol used to work, (amongst other things), as a book designer. This cover was done for New Directions Publishing and printed in 1961.
There is more to read about it, on the ND blog just here .

I was instantly drawn to this cover, for its risky and irreverent approach, as well as for its beautiful, simple and effective design. Warhol created a false pattern where each stamped head is individual and different from the next in tone and texture.
This is why this cover is visually so vibrant and alive.

This is part of the "Head-dress" series .
I used the same head to depict the men in a stamp like manner. Once again, the idea was to create a feeling of repetition and uniformity. This is not completely finished but on its way. The stamp is an economic, simplified way to illustrate an idea without bringing any further narration. Because these stamped-heads are impersonal, they become abstract, conceptual and furthermore, enigmatic...

Intricate beauty by design

Le Marquis de Sade

Last week, I was working on a series of illustrations for Philosophie Magazine in Paris. The theme was Sade's philosophie.
For the main portrait, I drew in pencil the Marquis's profile, and created a background of little naked women tied up in various positions and floating around Sade's face. The original engravings of "Justine" reminded me of some circus stunts that I wished to translate in the portrait.

The net of little women needed to feel like a pattern (some of the figures are copied and repeated), and the image had to be design led rather than narrative.
Often in my images, the pattern is used, and interrupted...
I like the obssessivness of the pattern, which was well suited for the Marquis de Sade, and often when you stir away from explicite narration, an ambiguity appears which opens the door on another world. In this instance, the women look like submarine acrobats....I am probably the only one aware of that, but it keeps me happy!

By using a pattern of smiling tied up women, the aim was to keep the violence of Sade underlining, and portray his refinement rather than his cruelty.
The Magazine is out 8th July... Until then, let's peep through the keyhole...

Just finished and approved! Cockles and petals are amongst the most difficult things to draw without being "cliche", and that's why this cover has been so interesting to work on. Commissioned by Shortbooks for Betsy Tobin's last novel. The publication date is not until 4th November 2010, but I can't resist to show you a preview!
